Water sensors offer real-time data

Article Abstract:

Researchers at Syracuse University and the Upstate Fresh Water Institute, a nonprofit organization based in Syracuse, New York, dedicated to freshwater research is solving problems related to monitoring the quality of a body of water by deploying robot sensors that remain in the water at all times and capture data 24 hours a day, under all conditions. The newer sensors will offer a more complete chemical spectrum and will enable researchers to determine how changes in conditions upstream might affect a given water body.

Park demonstrate erosion processes

Article Abstract:

National science Foundation's Science and Technology Centers Program part of the National Center for Earth-Surface Dynamics (NCED) teamed with the Science Museum of Minnesota, located in St.Paul, to build a park that would enable visitors to learn about geology, geomorphology, hydraulics, and ecology. The goal of the university St.Anthony Falls Laboratory is to raise public awareness of the earth's changing landscape and the effects of changes in sediment flows on the environment.

Combining data yields more accurate mapping

Article Abstract:

The commercial satellites continue to generate ever-shaper images of the urban landscape but the ability of computers to accurately discriminate and analyze the contents of those images in not keeping pace. Curt Davis developed a method, which enables the computer to consider such attributes as size, texture, and shape in classifying structures.
