Where in the world: New ways of working are making global economic development difficult to estimate

Article Abstract:

It is fairly easy to ascertain the effects of globalization in manufacturing, but the area of telemediated operations does not lend itself to precise measurement. Telemediated operations mean that links effectively become independent of geographical location, and such work takes many forms. A report from the Institute for Employment Studies suggests that teleworking falls into three main categories, mobile working, relocation of whole groups of workers and relocation of work beyond national boundaries.

No free wheels

Article Abstract:

A study of 165 UK firms shows their use of four main car acquisition practices. These are outright purchase, finance lease/hire purchase, contract hire and contract purchase. About 29 of the firms have fleets of more than 1,000 while 60 have fleets between 201 to 1,000. A growing number of companies have also begun shifting away from outright purchases in favor of leasing to obtain relief from value added taxes.
