Why Johnny can't do science and math

Science training has almost disappeared from elementary education in many school districts, and by high school few students have any real interest in the subject. In math, students generally master nothing more than basic arithmetic by the eighth-grade. Possible education solutions are discussed.

US students rank near the bottom of industrialized nations in science and mathematics. Despite a 1983 plan by the National Science Board to make US math and science education the best in the world, various tests have confirmed that it seems to be far from that goal.

Issues concerning the techniques of teaching children science and mathematics are discussed. Children may be able to absorb abstract concepts at an earlier age than previously thought possible and learn more quickly using discovery learning techniques.
