A legal perspective

Article Abstract:

Effective interventions in dealing with psychological, financial and/or physical abuse of the elderly may be made through a collective effort by the civil and criminal legal systems. These systems differ in their rules, regulations and processes of intervention despite their coherent goals of ethical and effective protection, prevention and accountability. A careful evaluation of the competency of older adults, and the context in which abuse occurs can provide a least restrictive alternative and autonomy. Case studies advocate the use of multidisciplinary approach to elder abuse cases.

Therapeutic recreation for the institutionalized elderly: choice or abuse

Article Abstract:

The administrators and therapists of elderly nursing institutions in Alberta, Canada, believe that the residents enjoy the activities offered to them but most of the residents participate due to pressure rather than self-motivation. Activities in long-term care facilities may discriminate against the physically impaired residents which causes a feeling of incapability, loss of self-esteem, motivation, control, and autonomy. The external control and pressure by the authorities interferes with the residents' rights, and might cause behavioural conflicts and abuse.

Norway: weakness in welfare

Article Abstract:

The social awareness about elder abuse among Norwegians has increased despite the reduction in public funding for the health and social care of the elderly. Social workers are actively involved in negotiating help for the victims. However, the lack of a definition of elder abuse, privacy issues and barriers posed by bureaucracy have inhibited exploration of the problem. Public debates stress the need for shifting the responsibility from institutions to families, but increased support for social service intervention is a positive trend.
