A ray of hope for older Nigerians

Article Abstract:

Nigerians over age 65 make up less than 5% of the population of that country and the health concerns of older people have not been a priority of the Nigerian government, although it has announced implementation of new welfare packages. Disintegration of social values has aggravated the situation. The extended family system has been eroded. The government is putting in place programs supporting community living with support for the extended family system. Institutional care will not be a first choice. Free medical care and transportation are planned.
