Effectiveness of preventive in-home geriatric assessment in well functioning, community-dwelling older people: secondary analysis of a randomized trial

Article Abstract:

Periodic comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) in the homes of older healthy people may delay the onset of disability. Participants were living in the community and received annual CGAs followed by preventive visits every three months. Those who functioned quite well at the beginning of the project also had fewer days of impaired daily living activities during the next three years. In contrast, disability was even more pronounced in people with compromised activities.

The association between chronic illness and functional change among participants in a comprehensive geriatric assessment program

Article Abstract:

Certain chronic disorders may increase the rate of functional decline in elderly patients. Researchers gave a comprehensive exam to 222 community-dwelling elderly people and assessed instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) and basic activities of daily living (BADL) annually for 3 years. Gait/balance disorders, depression, unsafe environment, coronary artery disease, hypertension and urinary incontinence were associated with declines in IADL and BADL.
