Altered movement strategy increases lower extremity stiffness during stepping down in the aged

Article Abstract:

Research indicates that elderly people employ a safer movement strategy when stepping downwards by making their lower extremity alignment more erect to produce a stiffer leg. Elderly people used 28% less knee flexion and 92% less dorsiflexion than young people when stepping down, with knee joint range of motion 57% less and ankle range of motion 42% less. Linear shortening of the limb was 28% less in elderly people than young people.
