Ethnic differences in Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) scores: where you live makes a difference

Article Abstract:

This article evaluates the validity of a psychological test designed to measure cognitive functioning when used with a sample of Mexican-American and European-American older adults. Findings indicate that neighborhood type and educational status influenced participants' scores and that low scores were associated with cognitive impairment in both ethnic groups.

The Folstein Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) is a widely accepted screening tool for detecting cognitive impairment and dementia. The effects of scoring method, education, and language usage on internal consistency of the MMSE are reviewed

Association between acculturation and structural assimilation and mini-mental state examination - assessed cognitive impairment in older Mexican Americans: findings from the San Antonio longitudinal study of aging

Article Abstract:

Folstein Mini-Mental State Examination is used to determine the cognitive impairment. Using this method of examination, a comparative analysis of cognitive impairment in older Hispanic Americans with European Americans is presented. The study is based on elderly persons from San Antonio region. The effects of acculturation and structural assimilation on cognitive impairment are highlighted in the study.
