Estrogen replacement therapy and cognitive decline in older community women

Article Abstract:

Formal education rather than estrogen replacement therapy (ERT) seems to protect against cognitive decline in older women. Over a period of four to six years, researchers tested cognitive functioning in 9,651 older women twice. Past and present ERT use, age, education, and limits on activity were compared. Other than age, education predicted cognitive ability best. The benefits of learning later in life should be explored.
