Barriers to obtaining consent in dementia research: implications for surrogate decision-making

Article Abstract:

Many patients with dementia may be unable to participate in clinical trials because they have no surrogate who can give informed consent. In a study of 146 dementia patients eligible to receive palliative care as part of a clinical trial, almost half could not participate because the surrogate decision-maker could not understand the consent process or there was no surrogate decision-maker. Only four surrogate decision-makers actually refused to provide consent.
