Caregivers' utilization of health services: results from the Medicare Alzheimer's Disease Demonstration, Illinois site

Article Abstract:

A prospective randomized clinical trial has been carried out to look at utilization of health services on the part of 412 Medicare-eligible caregivers at the Illinois site for the Medicare Alzheimer's Disease Demonstration. Findings indicate that enhanced chronic illness case management directed at those with dementia and their caregivers can lower the need for acute hospital care.

Apathy in Alzheimer's disease

Article Abstract:

Research on the prevalence, neuropathology, and clinical impact of apathy in Alzheimer's disease (AD) is reviewed with emphasis on the significance of accurate diagnoses, therapeutic intervention, and future research. It can be argued that apathy, that is, loss of motivation, is the most common change in behavior in Alzheimer's disease but is underrecognized.

Cost effect of managing methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in a long-term care facility

Article Abstract:

It has been found that the management of a resident infected with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aure us (MRSA) is much more expensive for a long-term care facility (LTCF) than that of a methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus patient. A retrospective cohort study was carried out in a 37-bed LTCF that offers two levels of care.
