How much do persons with Alzheimer's disease cost Medicare?

Article Abstract:

Time elapsed since diagnosis for Alzheimer's disease was found to be an important factor in average total cost to Medicare in 1994, with expenses greater each passing year. The average total cost to Medicare of those with a claims-based AD diagnosis was $6,021 vs $2,301 for those without a diagnosis.

Health care utilization by old-old long-term care facility residents: How do Medicare fee-for-service and capitation rates compare?

Article Abstract:

Health care utilization on the part of old-old long-term care facility residents has been studied to see how capitation rates and Medicare fee-for-service (FFS) rates compare using data on Medicare Part A and Part B reimbursements from billing records and information on what would have been received under Medicare capitated rates. Data suggest that teams of geriatricians and physician extenders can lower hospitalization rates and overall expenditures. Providers need incentives to give high quality care that is also cost effective.
