Clinico-neuropathological correlation of Alzheimer's disease in a community-based case series

Article Abstract:

Neuropathological postmortem evidence often confirms an earlier diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) in patients from the community. Researchers found a sensitivity of 83% after comparing 134 cases of dementia, reaching a diagnostic accuracy of 75%. Evidence of additional neuropathy in the brain suggests vascular abnormalities or Parkinson's disease may be more common than generally thought. Only one third of the cases had AD exclusively.

Alzheimer's disease symptom severity in blacks and whites

Article Abstract:

African Americans may have more severe symptoms of Alzheimer's disease than Caucasians. Researchers compared the cognitive impairment of 38 African Americans to that of 415 Caucasians. African Americans also had higher rates of hypertension than Caucasians. There were no race differences in the rates of stroke and ischemic heart disease. More research is needed on minorities and Alzheimer's disease to rule out possible bias.

Validity and responsiveness of the Minimum Data Set

Article Abstract:

A study of a test used for measuring the cognitive performance, daily living activity and behavior of nursing home patients is discussed. Results indicate that the Minimum Data Set correlated reasonably well with other research instruments but was less useful in identifying dementia-related changes in daily life activities.
