Community-acquired pneumonia in the intensive care unit: epidemiological and prognosis data in older people

Article Abstract:

Older hospital patients with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) in intensive care units require care similar to that of younger adults. Mortality rates were higher in the oldest patient group than in younger ones, mostly due to related complications and hospital-acquired superinfections. Medication adjustments for the treatment of CAP include favoring beta-lactam/beta-lactamase inhibitors or third generation cephalosporin with the addition of aminoglycosides or quinolones. Withholding intensive care for reasons of age alone is inappropriate.

Venous thrombosis in older people: prevalence of the factor V gene mutation Q506

Article Abstract:

Researchers conducted a study to investigate the biological risk factors in older hospital patients with venous thromboembolism. Participants included 79 geriatric patients, 60 women and 19 men, with a mean age of 83 years who had at least one proven episode of venous thromboembolism. The study confirmed that hereditary deficiencies in coagulation inhibitors are seldom involved in the pathogenesis of venous thromboembolism in older subjects.

Shoulder pain in older people

Article Abstract:

Shoulder pain is commonly seen in older people, but most of the conditions can be treated nonoperatively and conservatively. Steroid injections can be helpful therapeutically and diagnostically. A clear understanding of the anatomy and the conditions encountered most commonly is needed. In a small percentage of patients operative intervention is required.
