Decision making and the principles of screening for breast cancer

Article Abstract:

Screening is a test administered to a population at risk for a disease but does not exhibit overt symptoms of that disease. It is undertaken to diagnose preclinical symptoms which will enable a physician to institute early therapy thus greatly improving one's prognosis. However, the effectiveness of breast cancer screening in elderly women has been the subject of much debate. Arguments were directed to the possibility of diminished quality of life and increased morbidity with advancing age. Such factors together with costs will greatly offset the benefits from breast cancer screening.

Breast cancer screening in older women: an overview

Article Abstract:

Breast cancer commonly affects American women aged 65 and older and despite technological improvements in detection and treatment, breast cancer incidence and mortality rates are consistently increasing. Demographic calculations show that by year 2010, 15% of the American population will be over 65 which means a remarkable increase in morbidity and mortality in breast cancer among individuals of this age group. As such, there is a need to examine screening methods to address the public health implications of the aging population.

Supporting statements and rationale

Article Abstract:

A summary of the Forum on Breast Cancer Screening in Older Women's scientific findings and their rationale was presented. One of the most significant findings of the forum panel was that incidence of breast cancer increases with advancing age. In addition, the status of screening modalities, its efficacy and cost effectiveness have been examined. The factors which contribute to the decline of its utilization and compliance by women clients were also discussed.
