Depressive symptoms across older spouses and the moderating effect of marital closeness

Article Abstract:

Older married couples affect each other's emotional well-being depending on the closeness of their relationship and the perceptions of one spouse of the other's psychological state and the marital relationship as a whole. A study of older couples found that one spouse could be negatively affected by depressive symptoms in their partners if they were very close, despite the supportive or buffering quality that can be brought into such a close relationship. At the same time, husbands were found to be readily affected by their wives' health status if they were particularly close.
