Change in depressive symptoms among daughter caregivers: An 18-month longitudinal study

Article Abstract:

The caregiving experiences of daughters caring for an aging parent have been investigated in a longitudinal study, to determined how their psychological well-being changes over an 18-month period. Levels of depressive symptoms exhibited by the daughters were relatively low, and daughters who used problem-focused coping strategies had reduced levels of depression, while those who used emotion-focused coping, exhibited increased depression levels.

Recurrent syndromal depression in caregivers

Article Abstract:

A study of recurrent syndromal depression in 103 caregivers grouped into chronically, episodically, and those never depressed reveals that the chronically depressed caregivers experienced a higher degree of stress, disturbing social support, depressive symptomatology, supplemented with higher episodes of adverse life events and more negative reactions to adverse patient behavior. The results emphasize the importance of positive social support.

Evidence-based psychological treatments for distress in family caregivers of older adults

Article Abstract:

Psychotherapy, psycho-educational programs, and multicomponent interventions are identified as evidence-based psychological treatments for reducing distress and improving the well-being of family caregivers of older adults. Future research should include the development of more well-integrated multicomponent approaches, and greater incorporation of new technologies for treatment delivery.
