Impairments of muscles and nerves associated with peripheral arterial disease and their relationship with lower extremity functioning: The InCHIANTI study

Article Abstract:

The relationship between the lower extremity peripheral arterial disease (PAD), pathophysiological findings in the lower extremity muscles, and nerves and lower extremity performance is examined in a cross-sectional study. The findings suggest that muscle power may mediate the association between lower ankle-brachial index (AB1) levels and poorer functional performance.

Physical performance measures in the clinical setting

Article Abstract:

The ability of gait speed and a three-item lower extremity performance battery to predict12-month rates of hospitalization are assessed. The details concerning the physical performance measures are discussed, which serve as easily accessible 'vital signs' to screen older adults in clinical settings.
