Influence of time on social preferences: implications for life-span development

Article Abstract:

Four studies have tested the key aspect of socioemotional selectivity theory: perceived limitations on time are linked with the prioritizing of emotional goals, creating preferences for emotionally meaningful social partners. This theory predicts that older people are more likely than younger people to prefer familial social partners who are more able to meet their emotional needs. This research backed up this theory, indicating that development is a lifelong process in which there is an age-related increase in specialization. It is suggested that the central mechanism specified in socioemotional selectivity theory operates across cultures.
