Integrating mental health care into residential homes for the elderly: an analysis of six Dutch programs for older people with severe and persistent mental illness

Article Abstract:

Evaluation of six mental health service programs for nursing home residents in the Netherlands emphasizes communication difficulties between psychiatrists and nursing home staff due to different conceptualizations of medical care quality. The most successful program is that in which mental health professionals are assigned to nursing homes by psychiatric hospitals and remain operationally and administratively separate from nursing home management.
