Interpersonal control strivings and vulnerability to negative social exchanges in later life

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to investigate older adults' vulnerability to negative social exchanges by examining how they strive to accomplish the interrelated task of preventing negative exchanges or reducing the emotional distress aroused by negative social exchanges when they occur. The results reveal that interpersonal control strivings directed towards preserving emotional health when harmony is threatened were associated with less reactivity.

The relative importance of three domains of positive and negative social exchanges: a longitudinal model with comparable measures

Article Abstract:

A cross-sectional and longitudinal analysis is done to find out whether positive or negative social exchanges more strongly affect psychological health. It is noted that research on the relative importance of negative and positive exchanges has given little consideration to the subjective appraisals of exchanges.
