Interventions in hypothetical elder abuse situations suggested by Swedish formal carers

Article Abstract:

There is little public awareness in Sweden of elder abuse and no consensus of interventions has been developed. A study designed to describe the interventions suggested by three healthcare professionals in three characteristic cases of elder abuse finds that few interventions are put forward. The respondents are presented with a spouse abuse case, a dependent adult child case and a caregiving relative case. The study finds that professionals in Sweden have little knowledge of elder abuse and are uncertain about their interventions, mainly seeing the problem as a social one.

An empirical examination of the characteristics, consequences, and causes of elder abuse in nursing homes

Article Abstract:

Different types of abuse are committed in nursing homes, but the extent of the abuse is difficult to determine. Nurses' aides are accused more often than other staff. This is probably due to their large numbers and closer contact with the residents rather than more acts of abuse. While males are under represented on the staffs of nursing homes, they are more often the abuser. Male residents are more likely to be victims of abuse than the females. Offenders regard their actions as responses to stressful situations. Stricter laws are needed to prevent elder abuse.
