Low serum calcidiol concentration in older adults with reduced muscular function

Article Abstract:

Older people with reduced muscle strength often have lower calcidiol and calcitriol levels, two important vitamin D metabolites, in their blood. Researchers found lower calcidiol serum concentrations in older people with lower arm muscle strength and other physiological weaknesses. Calcitriol concentrations were linked less specifically with physical activity and recent falls. Vitamin D supplementation is recommended.

Long-term functional outcome after intensive care

Article Abstract:

Older patients may recover as successfully as younger patients after discharge from the intensive care unit (ICU). Researchers found comparable rates of physical recovery after 6 weeks and after 6 months among 222 ICU eldery admissions. The main predictor of good recovery was the level of healthy functioning prior to hospital admission, not the diminished functional assessment on ICU admission.

The importance of including the home environment in assessment of frail older people

Article Abstract:

Hazards in the homes of older frail people must be clearly identified and eliminated. Throw rugs, clutter, poor lighting, and exposed electrical cords may be the cause of wounds and injuries. Home inspections are necessary to address specifics with each patient to prevent potentially deadly falls. Educational pamphlets have been shown to be of limited value.
