Making your mutual funds less taxing

Article Abstract:

Individuals who want to acquire huge tax benefits from owning mutual funds may do so by choosing funds that generate less dividend income. It would also be wise to purchase mutual funds before the ex-dividend period so as to prevent additional tax charges arising from capital gains.

The Taxpayer Relief Act approved in 1997 may reduce or eliminate the charges that the Internal Revenue Service imposes on estates. The federal estate-tax exemption, meanwhile, is being increased in steps to $1 mil, with $625,000 for 1998.
