Mammography use among women as a function of age and patient involvement in decision-making

Article Abstract:

Mammography use among women has been studied relative to age and patient involvement in decision-making with the finding that older women are substantially less likely than younger ones to have active involvement in the mammography decision-making process. Greater use of screening mammography by older women will require more promotion by physicians, and other interventions may be needed.

Breast cancer screening in older women

Article Abstract:

Physicians should consider recommending annual or at least biennial mammography for women under age 76 and after that biennially or at least every 3 years with no upper age limit for women with an estimated life expectancy of at least 4 years. Breast self-examination instruction during clinical breast examination (CBE) is recommended for those with adequate manual dexterity or a willing partner to carry it out once a month.
