Marital closeness, functional disability, and adjustment in late life

Article Abstract:

The impact of marital closeness on depression, anxiety and self-esteem at different levels of functional disability based on socioemotional selectivity theory (SST) was examined. It showed that high levels of marital closeness helped in overcoming depression, anxiety and was positively associated with self-esteem. It was also more beneficial at higher levels of functional disability because such persons are more needy and require greater help with concrete tasks.

Prospective patterns of resilience and maladjustment during widowhood

Article Abstract:

Research on an older sample beginning prior to the death of a spouse reveals that chronic grief stems from the upheaval surrounding the loss of a healthy spouse, whereas chronic depression results from more enduring emotional difficulties that are exacerbated by the loss. Remarkably both the resilient and the depressed-improved groups showed healthy profiles, with little evidence of effects of loss.

Social support as a predictor of variability: An examination of the adjustment trajectories of recent widows

Article Abstract:

The way in which variables that compromise the social support network help in coping with conjugal loss suffered by 28 widows was studied. Individuals with greater levels of perceived control for social support exhibited a less pronounced overall adjustment whereas emotional support seeking led to more pronounced overall adjustment.
