Mortality one-year postdischarge from a Veterans Affairs Geriatric Evaluation and Management Unit: assessing mortality risks

Article Abstract:

Mortality one year after discharge from a veterans affairs Geriatric Evaluation and Management (GEM) Unit at a Veterans Affairs (VA) medical center has been studied in an effort to assess admission factors that relate to mortality risks. Prospective data were used to assess relative risks. It was found that age at admission did not correlate with death, but it correlated with risk scores. Differences in mortality were gone about 100 days after discharge. Various potential risk factors were found using multivariate analysis. The development of a usable risk protocol must be based on additional data and causal models may be required to assess patient conditions as they relate to GEM success.

Geriatric patients improve as much as younger patients from hospitalization on general psychiatric units

Article Abstract:

An attempt is made to determine whether geriatric patients aged 65 and older on general adult psychiatric units improve as much as younger patients, over what duration their improvement occurs, and their risk of readmission. However, it was observed that geriatric patients on general inpatient psychiatry units improved as much as younger patients.
