Using admission characteristics to predict return to the community from a post-acute geriatric evaluation and management unit

Article Abstract:

The use of admission characteristics that would predict return to the community is discussed based on a study of 452 patients at a post-acute geriatric evaluation and management (GEM) unit in a skilled nursing facility (SNF). The study was to compare the Nursing Severity Index (NSI) and the Cumulative Illness Rating Scale (CIRS) as predictors and to define a multivariate model for predicting. It was found that both the NSI and the CIRS were important for a model that would improve selection and matching of geriatric patients for post-acute services.
