Survival to late dementia in Dutch nursing home patients

Article Abstract:

An observational analysis of a cohort of patients has been carried out followed by a prospective follow-up to investigate the determinants of survival to late dementia in Dutch nursing home patients. It was found that one of seven nursing home patients with dementia survived to late dementia. Such information is useful in giving information about a prognosis to relatives of a patient. Some patients lived 25 years after disease onset. Most who reached late dementia were women with A lzheimer's disease, and for most of them the phase lasted one year or less. Dementia shortens life expectancy.
