Muted lives: older battered women

Article Abstract:

Access to state and non-state resources is important for old battered women if they are to escape abuse. This is critical because they neither have employment nor pensions. Social Security, Medicare and public housing can be the key supports that can ameliorate their sufferings. However, battered older women are rarely the focus of domestic violence intervention systems. They are thought to be in a lesser need of attention. Most are seen as frail elders in need of care, rather than as strong survivors. They can tackle the abuses better if they develop adequate coping skills.

The Registration Question

Article Abstract:

The candidacy of Jesse Jackson for the Democratic presidential nomination appears to be causing higher voter registration by blacks. Despite the increased voter turnout, however, it is evident that Jackson's goal of registering two million new black voters by the November election will not be met. Cases of whites obstructing black voter registration have been reported.
