Practice guidelines: a limited role in resolving rationing decisions

Article Abstract:

Practice guidelines may be useless in many clinical decisions and even dangerous. Physicians make millions of decisions, whereas the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research has created only 18 practice guidelines at a cost of up to $1 million per guideline. Many guidelines are supposedly based on scientific evidence but they also contain hidden value judgements. Many conflicts occur between guidelines produced by different associations.

Article Abstract:

The experience of guiding a troubled Space Shuttle in a mission-control room simulator at Space Camp at the US Space and Rocket Center is recounted. The participants are also given the chance to experience how it feels to be inside the Space Shuttle as it orbits the earth on its return flight.
