Preparing Canadian physicians for health care of older adults

Article Abstract:

Many Canadian provinces are attempting to provide more geriatrics training to their primary care physicians. All medical schools in Canada provide courses in geriatrics and many students are exposed to the care of older people during their clerkships. Geriatric medicine was created as a subspecialty of internal medicine in 1977 and there are several professional societies, including the Canadian Society of Geriatric Medicine and the Canadian Association on Gerontology.

Anabolic agents to treat osteoporosis in older people: is there still place for fluoride?

Article Abstract:

Studies show that while fluoride can increase lumbar spine bone mineral density, no observable reduction in vertebral fractures has been noted, making it a less efficacious therapy for osteoporosis. Further research is suggested for low dose fluoride, combined with vitamin D and calcium, for osteoporosis treatment.
