Prevalence and risks of dementia in the Japanese population: RERF's Adult Health Study Hiroshima subjects

Article Abstract:

Dementia rates in Japan may be similar to health profiles in the United States. Researchers examined 2,222 older atomic bomb survivors in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan. Nurses measured cognitive impairment, including an item on judgment. The overall prevalence of dementia was 7.2% with the Alzheimer's rate for women 3.8% and 2.0% for men. As expected, Alzheimer's rates increased with age. Sex and radiation exposure were not found to be significant factors in vascular dementia or Alzheimer's disease.
