Healthy centenarians do not exist, but autonomous centenarians do: a population-based study of morbidity among Danish centenarians

Article Abstract:

The article examines the occurrence of common illnesses in 276 Danish centenarians who reached their 100th birthday during April 1, 1995 to May 31, 1996. Cardiovascular disease was found in 72% of the subjects, with osteoarthritis, hypertension and dementia occurring in more than 50% of the subjects. Autonomous subjects were not free of illness.

Thyroid function, morphology and prevalence of thyroid disease in a population-based study of Danish centenarians

Article Abstract:

Thyroid dysfunction among centenarians is not more prevalent than among the younger aged. Low serum T3 is related to poor physical function and co-morbidity, while thyroid autoimmunity is related only to poor physical functioning. Despite atrophy of the thyroid gland, these results suggest that thyroid function is well preserved in centenarians.
