Patterns of onset of disability in activities of daily living with age

Article Abstract:

This article examines patterns in disability progression among British men and women over seventy-five years old. Findings indicate that daily activities involving strength in the lower-extremities like bathing, toileting, and mobility diminish before activities that rely on upper-extremity strength such as feeding and dressing.

Rapid increase of fall-related severe head injuries with age among older people: a population-based study

Article Abstract:

A population-based study into the rapid increase of fall-related severe head injuries with age in the elderly has been carried out in rural Finland in subjects older than 69, 1016 of whom lived at home and 143 of whom lived in institutions. A 10-year age increase was associated with almost a doubling in rates of falls and severe head injuries. Strong measures should be in place to prevent such injuries.
