Risk factors for symptomatic peripheral arterial disease in older persons in an academic hospital-based geriatrics practice

Article Abstract:

Age, cigarette smoking, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, serum LDL cholesterol and low serum HDL cholesterol are significant independent risk factors for symptomatic peripheral arterial disease in older persons, according to results of a retrospective analysis of charts from an outpatient geriatrics patient. The study involved 467 men with a mean age of 80 and 1444 women with a mean age of 81.

Prevalence of coronary artery disease, atherothrombotic brain infarction, and peripheral arterial disease: associated risk factors in older Hispanics in an academic hospital-based geriatrics practice

Article Abstract:

Many elderly Hispanics have some type of cardiovascular disease. A study of 213 Hispanics aged 64 to 100 found that 28% had coronary artery disease, 20% had atherothrombotic brain infarction and 16% had peripheral arterial disease. Altogether, 42% had one of these diseases. These diseases were linked to age, smoking, hypertension, diabetes, obesity and blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

Article Abstract:

About 32% of older people diagnosed with coronary artery diseases also had ischemic stroke, while 26% had peripheral arterial disease. In those diagnosed with ischemic stroke, 56% also had coronary artery disease and 28% peripheral arterial diseases. If peripheral arterial disease was present, coronary artery disease was also present in 68% and ischemic stroke in 42% of the population.
