To investigate prevalence rates of hearing impairment, as assessed by the Sanders' questionnaire and the speech audiometry test, and comorbid conditions in older people a study was carried out in the Veneto region of Italy. A higher prevalence of hearing impairment was found with speech audiometry tests than had been found with a self-reported questionnaire. Impairment was associated with poor health, as self-reported, diabetes and cognitive impairment in past users of alcohol and in men with little education. Self-reported hearing impairment was associated with depressive symptoms.
