Treatment of pain in cognitively impaired compared with cognitively intact older patients with hip-fracture

Article Abstract:

A study has been carried out to compare the experience of pain and treatment of pain in cognitively impaired vs in cognitively intact older people after a hip fracture surgical repair. Neither pain report nor pain intensity differed significantly in one group vs the other. Cognitively impaired subjects scored significantly higher on the Checklist of Nonverbal PAin Indicators observed with movement vs the other group. Pain is not treated effectively in older postoperative adults. Cognitive impairment and age influence greatly the amount of analgesic nurses offer after hip repair.

Mitral balloon valvotomy for the treatment of mitral stenosis in octogenarians

Mitral balloon valvotomy can be safely done in patients with mitral valve stenosis who are 80 years old or older, according to a study of 20 patients. Mitral valve stenosis is a heart valve disease caused by calcification of the valve that can be treated by threading a deflated balloon through a heart catheter and inflating the balloon inside the valve.
