Propoxyphene use by community-dwelling and institutionalized elderly Medicare beneficiaries

Article Abstract:

Findings indicate that propoxyphene use is high among community-dwelling elderly Medicare patients but significantly higher among their institutionalized counterparts. Since propoxyphene has been found to produce adverse side effects rendering it inappropriate for older patients, the study emphasizes the need for improved pain management in this population.
