Reorganization of prehension components following perturbation of object size

Article Abstract:

Responses of older and younger persons to a perturbation of object size during a reach-to-grasp movement were compared. Older subjects exhibited patterns of movement similar to younger subjects. However, their motor output are more cautious than younger subjects. This was more apparent in the way their hands were honed in on the object. Findings indicate that older persons are more prone to accidents because their patterns of movement are more rigid when they react to unanticipated motor requirements.
