Reporting of dementia on death certificates: a community study

Article Abstract:

A prospective epidemiological community study into the extent to which conditions suggesting dementia on death certificates of older people and what factors are involved has been carried out. Over eight follow-up years, records of 527 persons who died, out of a cohort of 1,422 aged 65 and up, were studied. Alzheimer's disease is widely regarded as a leading cause of death, but dementias are reported on the death certificates on just quarter of those to whom the term applies. When dementia is advanced, for those in long-term care, and with probable Alzheimer's disease, reporting is more likely.

A patient-centered approach to advance medical planning in the nursing home

Article Abstract:

Patients in the nursing home can plan the type of medical care they wish to receive. Medical personnel discussed the care goals with 38 patients and their respective families soon after their arrival in the nursing home. Options ranged from intensive, life-prolonging efforts to the provision of comfort only. Patients chose more comprehensive care patterns, while family members tended to select basic and palliative care. These decisions may be more palatable than stark directives.
