The consequences of belonging: conflict management techniques among Japanese Americans

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted among Japanese Americans to investigate the relationships of the problem of elder abuse to cultural patterns in society. Twenty-seven transcripts from interview of 22 Japanese in Hawaii and Seattle, WA, were examined using grounded theory analysis which is an inductive, action and interactional oriented technique of theory building. Results indicate that behaviors in conflict situations are governed heavily by group loyalty.

Private enforcement of criminal mandatory reporting laws

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted to examine the existing enforcement mechanisms of mandatory reporting laws on elder abuse or neglect in several states. Studies indicate, however, that these criminal enforcement efforts are at worse almost nonexistent and ineffectual at best. Some alternative remedies to the problem of reporting elder abuse or neglect are presented and deserve to be legally tested.
