The use of proxy respondents in studies of older adults: lessons, challenges and opportunities

Article Abstract:

Use of proxy respondents in studies of older adults has been studied. A Medline review has found 24 clinical studies, 1990-1999, using proxy data as a source of information about this group. Findings tend to support use of proxy ratings among older adults in many, but not all, areas when self-reports are not available. More evaluation is needed.

The relationship between cargivers' global ratings of Alzheimer's disease patients' quality of life, disease severity, and the caregiving experience

Article Abstract:

A survey of caregivers of Alzheimer's patients reveals how the caregivers rate their patients' global quality of life (QOL), and how the qualities of patient and caregiver influence the QOL assessments. Findings suggest that the experience of burden and depression negatively impacts the assessment of QOL by caregivers.

Cost of Alzheimer's disease and related dementia in managed-Medicare

Article Abstract:

The costs related to Alzheimer's disease and related dementia in managed care organizations (MCOs) and under Medicare are discussed. In a large MCO a study was carried out to see whether those diagnosed with dementia have higher healthcare utilization rates and costs than others. It was found that higher costs and disproportionate inpatient costs patterns were like those for Medicare enrollees in fee-for-service plans. Very significant clinical/financial incentives exist for managed care to improve care of dementia sufferers.
