The relationship between clinical assessments of nutritional status and adverse outcomes in older hospitalized medical patients

Article Abstract:

Malnutrition in hospitalized older patients is common and poses other health risks. Almost 60% of 369 examined older hospital patients were well nourished, but the remaining patients were moderately to severely malnourished. Nutritional deficits included weight loss and other physical symptoms. Extremely malnourished patients were most at risk to die within one year, recovered more slowly from their illness, and required more nursing home care than their well nourished counterparts.

Diagnosis-related group-adjusted hospital costs are higher in older medical patients with lower functional status

Article Abstract:

Prospective study is undertaken to determine whether hospital costs are higher in patients with lower functional status at admission, after adjustment for Medicare Diagnosis Related Group (DRG) payments. Results reveal that DRG based payments provide hospitals a financial incentive to avoid patients dependent in activities of daily living (ADLs).
