A longitudinal cohort study has been carried out to assess t he yield, reliability, and validity of a postal survey for screening community-dwelling ol der people. It was found that a postal screening can reach patients for geriatric assessment services successfully . A subgroup of older outpatients with multiple geri atric syndromes who were at greater risk for hospitalization and nursing home admission and who could benefit, potentially, from geriatric intervention was identified .

Development and testing of a five-item version of the Geriatric Depression Scale

Article Abstract:

A 5-item Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) was found to be as effective as the 15-item GDS for depression screening in 74 frail outpatients at a geriatric outpatient clinic in California. A five-item version was developed and tested for effectiveness in a cross-sectional study. Administration time was markedly reduced. This test, if validated elsewhere, may turn out to be the preferred test for depression screening.
