Benevolent altruism or ordinary reciprocity? A response to Austin's view of the Mindanao hinterland

Article Abstract:

Criminologist Timothy Austin made an extensive study on specific aspects of Philippine culture and personality, particularly the element of altruism which triggers the formation of self-help organizations and strategies. However, his research is riddled with numerous flaws, as evidenced by his myopic overview of Philippine culture. His study, which focused on the area of Mindanao, makes a sweeping generalization of the culture, languages and behavior in the area, claiming that such characteristics apply to the entire nation as well. He has also failed to present a concrete definition of altruism, and that his arguments often contradict his own statements.

Evaluating the response of Swazi traditional leaders to development workshops

Article Abstract:

Traditional chiefs respond positively to development education workshops, according to an evaluation of Swazi tribal leaders. A significant increase in the number of local development organizations organized and changes in the role and development-related activities of the chief and his council members are noted following exposure to week-long workshops on local-level development. Problems linked with the manipulation of African chiefs' roles are also discussed.
