Beyond Richard Rorty's public: relegitimizing the quest for transcendence

Article Abstract:

Richard Rorty's views regarding the absence of a moral relationship between public and private spheres are flawed for various reasons. In both theory and practice, religious and philosophical foundations are inseparable from public principles of justice. In addition, Rorty's concept of a public sphere is corrupted by prejudices and personal preferences. John Rawl's concept of justice was used by Rorty in his assumptions.

Rescuing the 'Gorgias' from Latour

Article Abstract:

A study argues that Bruno Latour's attempts to refute the 'Gorgias', Plato's early 'Socratic' dialogue, on the grounds that its anti-democratic philosophy distorts the human understanding of science and democracy, is a failure. A different reading of the 'Gorgias' is presented and the dialogue's possible relevance for present day theories of deliberative democracy is discussed.
