Communicative unreason: Bataille and Habermas

Article Abstract:

Jurgen Habermas honored Georges Bataille as the origin of French postmodern neo-conservatism, but he objected to Bataille's characterization of communication as a common-sense activity. Habermas felt linguistic and non-linguistic communication were preceded by another kind of communication that passed between people like energy particles. Bataille did not present an alternative to Habermas's theory of communication but deconstructs Habermas, producing a more accurate theory.
