Comte and the Encyclopedia

Article Abstract:

The modern genealogy of the 'Encyclopedia' project is examined with particular focus on three moments, Bacon's 'Great Instauration' and attempted fashioning of a 'New Organon', the Encyclopedia of 1751 and its revolutionary-era successors, and Comte's 'system' of positive philosophy. Comte's forthright articulation of the technocratic and religious dimensions of the Baconian project illuminates elements of the French Enlightenment and derivatives from it that have received sufficient attention.

On the sociology of the family

Article Abstract:

The idea of family development as evolutionary is opposed by recognition of a variety of early family forms. The relationship between mother and child seems to be the fundamental unit around which the family has formed. Economic aspects of the family, including the relationship between private property and monogamy, are also significant for sociological analysis.

From Comte to Baudrillard: socio-theology after the end of the social

Article Abstract:

Modern French sociology has centered on the relationship between theological and social issues since the work of Auguste Comte in the early 19th century. Jean Baudrillard extended Comte's work to include a nihilistic "second death of God," where rationalism and a sense of the social have disintegrated.
