Does technological convergence imply convergence in markets? Evidence from the electronics industry

Article Abstract:

A correlation exists between technological diversification and improvement in business operation. Utilization of data involving internal and external growth operations of 32 largest US and European electronic companies revealed that several of the firms investigated have concentrated on fewer industries while maintaining a high degree of technological diversification during 1980s. Extensive diversification was prevented despite the occurrence of widespread technological convergence mainly because of the idiosyncratic nature of the downstream markets which are needed by different electronics market.
